Encourage safe work practices with the Safety Ladder
What do you do about safety on and around your construction sites? Do you only provide the technical means, or do you also make employees aware of the risks? With the Safety Ladder, safety awareness among personnel becomes transparent and improves. This reduces the risk of accidents.
From 2022, many clients will make the instrument mandatory. SKG-IKOB helps you properly introduce the Safety Ladder in your company.
Figures from Inspectorate SZW show that poor communication, high time pressure and insufficient alertness are common causes of accidents. So just providing the technical means is not enough. To make construction sites truly safe, workers must become aware of the risks.
safety culture ladder
To ensure this in practice, the Safety Culture Ladder has been developed. This is a certification scheme to assess, measure and continuously improve safety awareness and consciously safe actions. Is safety discussed regularly? Is there sufficient opportunity to raise unsafe situations? The more responsibility, reflection and investment, the higher the step. The Safety Ladder thus highlights other aspects than systems such as ISO 45001 and VCA.
In mid-March 2020, SKG-IKOB and standardization institute NEN, administrator of the Safety Ladder, signed a license agreement. In accordance with this agreement, SKG-IKOB is authorized to certify construction and infrastructure companies for the Safety Ladder.
Review moments
The Safety Ladder includes several products with different review times:
SCL Original: SKG-IKOB carries out a full audit every year
SCL: a full audit is carried out in the first year and a follow-up audit of 40 percent in the second and third years
SCL Light: this starts with a 40 percent audit in the first year, a check on the action plan takes place in the second and third years
Approved Self Assessment: this is an assessment carried out by the company itself, SKG-IKOB checks that this has been done process-wise and in the agreed manner
SCL Original and SCL issue to those who have successfully completed the audit: an SCL Original or SCL certificate. This states the step achieved. SCL Light does not entitle you to a certificate, but to a statement indicating the step achieved. With the Approved Self Assessment, no statement is issued and therefore no indication of the achieved step. SKG-IKOB issues a statement stating that the self-assessment has been carried out satisfactorily.
Mandatory from 2022
Safety awareness will be included as an obligation in many tenders and contracts in the construction and infrastructure sector. That is what the signatories of the Governance Code 'Safety in Construction' have agreed. From 2021, they will use the Safety Ladder to make the safety awareness of performing parties measurable, transparent and comparable. From 2022, step 2 of the ladder will be required, and from 2024 even step 3. The signatories are convinced that safety awareness leads to fewer accidents. By using the Safety Ladder, you show that the topic is also a top priority for you.
Fewer accidents, less absenteeism
Use of the Safety Ladder will permeate all levels of the organization. Your employees will become more aware of risks. They work safely and will report unsafe situations to their supervisor. This results in a higher level of safety and fewer accidents.
This prevents a lot of personal suffering, high absenteeism and failure costs, and unnecessary work delays.
