Monumental tiled roofs: a trade in itself
Work will soon begin on a URL for historic tile coverings. The URL is an initiative of the foundation Erkende Restauratiekwaliteit Monumentenzorg (ERM) and association Het Slopende Dak (HHD). The purpose of the implementation guideline is to make clear, nationally applicable agreements on how to maintain and restore pan coverings.
The focus here is on monuments, but a contractor or owner can use the guideline with other historic properties as well.
Leakage on monument roof; how to proceed
Pans weather under the influence of weather. When flaking occurs on the underside, deterioration goes unnoticed for a long time. Suddenly they leak and the tiles must be replaced immediately. Leaks can also be caused by the tiles not connecting properly (shifted tiles or improperly laid). A ridge, valley gutter, corner eaves or the connection against the chimney can also leak. So how do you proceed? You deal with a monument differently than with a new building, especially since roofs often determine the face.
Implementation guideline
The implementation guideline describes the practicalities of the repair piece by piece. For example, the recording of the situation before the work starts (what is the cause of the damage, are tiles reusable, what fits on them, the characteristics of the roof). The best way to repair in accordance with the historical situation. And, of course, the requirements for historic tiles. In the past, there were often differences between tiles, even if they came from the same factory. And how do you insulate the roof under the tiles responsibly?
Ready by the end of 2016
The drafting of the URL is being guided by a committee that includes experts from various disciplines and organizations. The URL is expected to be ready by the end of 2016. It will be published at www.stichtingERM.nl. Roofers who want to distinguish themselves in this field can obtain a certificate based on BRL 4000 Maintenance and restoration of monuments starting in early 2017.
