New KOMO-BRL 2114: Strengthens Durability and Quality in Reflective Insulation Materials
SKG-IKOB has approved and published the Assessment Guideline (BRL) 2114. This guideline assesses the installation and performance of reflective insulation products for floors, facades and pitched roofs. With this, SKG-IKOB offers the construction industry a uniform way to determine the quality and effectiveness of these products.
Why the new KOMO-BRL 2114?
The BRL 2114 stems from the growing demand for clear guidelines for reflective insulation materials. Until now, an unambiguous guideline was lacking, leading to a jumble of claims without scientific substantiation. This new guideline is based on European standards and focuses specifically on the Dutch construction industry.
The BRL consists of several sections:
2114-00: General - process certificate and attestation
2114-01: Floors - process certificate
2114-02: Facades - process certificate
2114-03: Pitched roofs - process certificate
2114-55: Floors, facades and pitched roofs - attestation
Reflective insulation materials are applicable under floors with crawl spaces, on facades and on pitched roofs, where the insulation value depends on both the product and the stagnant air layers around it.
Sustainability and Efficiency
Aldo de Jong of SKG-IKOB, developer of the BRL 2114 on behalf of the Board of Experts on Post-insulation, describes the directive as a leap forward: "The BRL enables us to achieve a high insulation value with relatively little material. This is crucial for sustainable building practices. In addition to limiting heat transfer by conduction through the product, it also makes use of limiting energy loss through heat radiation. This can be done by having reflective surfaces (low emissivity, such as aluminum foil) adjacent to existing layers of air.
Quality assurance and certification
SKG-IKOB is a leading organization in the field of quality assurance and certification in the construction industry. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, SKG-IKOB develops assessment guidelines that meet market needs and contribute to safer and more efficient building practices.
