NEN-EN 16034, product standard for fire and smoke resistant windows and doors, officially published

By publication in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU C226/24 dated 10-07-2015), EN 16034:2014 has now been formally declared in force.

According to this publication, the transition period will be 3 years with an effective date of 01-12-2015. This means that on 01-12-2018 all fire-resistant windows and doors falling within the scope of EN 16034 that are placed on the market will have to be compulsorily CE-marked and provided with a declaration of performance. Since the transition period will start on 01-12-2015, this will be possible on a voluntary basis from that date. However, the above will only come into effect under the condition that a better alignment between EN 16034 and other product standards such as for windows and doors without fire and smoke-resistance properties (EN 14351-1), for garage doors and gates (EN 13241) and for automatic doors (EN 16361) has been achieved by 01-12-2015. If this condition is not met, it may be decided that the said dates should be postponed.

Before manufacturers are authorized to apply CE marking and issue a declaration of performance, these companies must demonstrate compliance with the requirements set out in EN 16034. This must be demonstrated by means of a Certificate of constancy of performance issued by a Notified Body such as SKG-IKOB Certification.

SKG-IKOB will host a meeting in the fall of 2015 to update you on developments and the latest state of the art.
